The distance from Skopje is 117 km, which takes about an hour by car or two hours by train ‘Skopje – Gevgelija’. Distance to the border with Greece is about 80 km.
The nearest international airports are: in Skopje (Alexander the Great Airport), in Ohrid (Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport, 195 Km), in Thessaloniki (International Airport “Macedonia”, 121 Km). From one point to another you can get by bus or by taxi. Also we can order for you a transfer from an airport .
Demir Kapija is one of the best places in Macedonia for climbing, mountaineering, trekking, fishing and other outdoor activities.
Although the first rout in canyon Demir Kapija was climbed (by our information) in 1974, and rocks have attracted sportsman for a long time, the most actively this area has been developing just in the last five years.
The count of routes and sectors have grown so fast and now, for climbers, tourists and backpackers, there are hostel and place for camping "Rock land Camp".
Now there are 12 sectors for sport climbing (more than 120 routes have varying category of difficulty from 4 to 8) and infinite potential for old and new TRAD routes.
The rocks are located near the roads and infrastructures, that gives fast access to the climbing sectors; most of it are suitable for the beginners and groups with children.
Most of the rocks are limestone but an hour away there are also sandstone and granite rocks for climbing, mountaineering and bouldering. Location of walls allows you to find a place for climbing at any time of the year. In the summertime everyone tries to hide in the shadow. In winter people can get joy from climbing in the sun light areas where rocks give their warmth.
For example, the long routes of the Sought Wall -
are considered good for winter because in summer one can climb there only during the early morning and late evening hours.
In the gorges of the canyon people follow the sun as it turns during the day. They hide in the shadow in summer and spend hours under the sun in winter.
The height of Demir Kapija does not exceed 200 m above the sea level. After Gevgelija, the place which is on the border with Greece, this area is considered the warmest in Macedonia. This makes Demir Kapija the most comfortable area of Macedonia for climbing and mountaineering in winter months.
Vardar River (pretty rough in spring and after rains) allows you to engage in water sports. For example, it is very popular to raft to the Mediterranean Sea in Thessaloniki.
There are a lot of caves around Demir Kapija, including unexplored ones, which are waiting for their explorers.
Also, there is nature reserve for the rare species of eagles and it is possible to arrange tours for birds watching lovers.
And, of course, we couldn't mention about great local wineries and tasty traditional kitchen.
Demir Kapija is open for all!!! You are welcome!!!
